Stage 1 Car Remap: Optimise Your Vehicle’s Performance

RS-Tronic has been working with the main car manufacturers for 14 years, with a network of 90 centres across France carrying out hundreds of Stage 1 remaps every month.

What is a Stage 1 car remap?

The term "Stage 1" refers to the first level of engine tuning in the vehicle remapping classification. It involves a software modification of the ECU (Engine Control Unit) map, with no mechanical dismantling or additional parts required. It is precisely this absence of hardware modifications that makes Stage 1 the most accessible and reversible type of modern tuning.

The principle: modifying the ECU map

Every modern vehicle is equipped with an ECU (Engine Control Unit), commonly referred to as the "engine control unit". It controls the engine’s key parameters in real time: fuel injection quantity, ignition timing, turbo boost pressure on turbocharged engines, and intake air flow.

When leaving the factory, this ECU operates with a standard map calibrated by the manufacturer to handle the most demanding global conditions: varying fuel quality, extreme temperatures, and inconsistent maintenance conditions. This "maximum safety margin" calibration leaves some unused performance potential. Stage 1 consists of rewriting this engine map to intelligently unlock these margins while strictly respecting the engine’s mechanical tolerances.

Stage 1, Stage 2, Stage 3: What are the differences?

Car engine remapping follows a standard classification divided into three progressive levels:

Stage 1 is purely software-based. No parts are replaced and no mechanical dismantling is required: only the ECU map is modified. It is the ideal solution for daily road use: more dynamic driving, improved driving comfort, and reduced fuel consumption.

Stage 2 combines software remapping with hardware modifications: sports exhaust system, direct intake kit, larger intercooler, and sometimes a reinforced clutch depending on the vehicle model. Stage 2 is aimed at drivers looking for significantly improved performance while maintaining road usability.

Stage 3 corresponds to a complete engine build and performance preparation. It involves major mechanical modifications: larger turbocharger, high-performance injectors, upgraded fuel pump, racing clutch and flywheel, and sometimes internal engine components (forged connecting rods, pistons).

What gains can you expect from a Stage 1 remap on your car?

Power gain

Torque gain

Improved driving experience

Fuel consumption reduction

Improved responsiveness

Frequently Asked Questions

Yes, completely. We systematically save the original engine map on our servers before any intervention. Returning the vehicle to its factory settings is possible free of charge for 5 years, at the centre where you had the Stage 1 remap carried out. This is useful in the event of resale, a visit to a dealership, or the end of the manufacturer’s warranty.

Not necessarily. The E85 ethanol conversion is a separate intervention from Stage 1: it adjusts the injection map to allow the use of Superethanol, without necessarily increasing power. If you want both benefits (fuel savings + performance), an E85+ remap combines both modifications.

Stage 1 remapping at RS-Tronic starts from €390. The price varies depending on your car model and the options selected.

A standard Stage 1 intervention takes between 2 and 4 hours: diagnostics, ECU reading, writing of the new engine map, and validation test drive. You will leave with your vehicle on the same day.
