What is a Stage 2 remap?

Stage 2 is the second level of engine tuning in the automotive performance classification. Unlike Stage 1, which only modifies the software calibration, Stage 2 combines two complementary interventions: the installation of performance parts to remove mechanical bottlenecks, and a complete ECU remap to take advantage of these new capabilities. This combination is what allows Stage 2 to achieve gains that go well beyond Stage 1, without moving into the extensive modifications of Stage 3.

One cannot work properly without the other: installing performance parts without recalibrating the ECU provides little to no real improvement, while carrying out a Stage 2 remap without the required hardware upgrades can lead to issues. The parts required for the upgrade

The sports air filter or cold air intake kit

A sports air filter or a cold air intake kit increases the airflow entering the engine with reduced turbulence, allowing the turbocharger to breathe more freely. It is one of the first components installed in any Stage 2 project.

The sports exhaust system or downpipe

This is the component that delivers the most noticeable improvement. Depending on your project, we install either a sports downpipe or a complete exhaust system.

The upgraded intercooler

A larger-volume intercooler (Wagner, Forge, do88) cools the intake air more effectively, making it denser and allowing the engine to produce more power at the same turbo pressure. On more advanced Stage 2 builds, it is an almost essential component.

The upgraded clutch

On high-performance Stage 2 builds or on certain sports cars (Audi S3, Golf R, BMW M, AMG…), the additional torque can exceed the capacity of the standard clutch. We then install an upgraded clutch (Sachs Performance, Helix, Sachs SRE) capable of reliably handling the extra torque over time, without slipping.

Not necessarily. On moderate Stage 2 builds, the original clutch can handle the additional power. On more advanced Stage 2 builds or high-performance sports cars, an upgraded clutch becomes necessary. Our technicians assess this point during the diagnostic process.

On turbocharged engines, +30 to +50% more power can be achieved, with torque gains that are often even greater. Beyond the figures, it is the entire character of the engine that changes: responsiveness, driving pleasure, and sound.

Yes, provided that the remap is custom-developed for the installed components, high-quality recognised parts are used, and proper maintenance is carried out. When these three conditions are met, Stage 2 does not reduce engine lifespan.
